Online learning isn't new to apprenticeships. Colleges and training providers have been delivering apprentice training remotely for years - but when Covid hit it really came into its own.
During lockdown, when people couldn't meet in person, online learning saved the day.
Without the ability to study, evidence what they'd learned and be assessed online, learners simply wouldn't have been able to begin or complete an apprenticeship.
Before the pandemic, most training providers offered a blend of face-to-face visits with remote support to deliver high-quality, consistent learning to apprentices.
That all changed during lockdown, when apprentices were not able to attend classes or go into work. All learning moved online, so training providers, employers and apprentices had to adapt very quickly to a new and challenging set of circumstances.
Now, many have returned to the popular blended, mix-and-match approach to learning. It works well but, as the pandemic years have shown us, it's not the only option. With the right software a full curriculum can be successfully planned for and delivered solely online. Remote learning allows apprentices to study at their own pace and at a time and place that suits them - and the needs of their employer.
Here's how you can plan, assign and track your learner's curriculum remotely with Onefile:
Once you've planned your learner's curriculum, you can create teaching and learning tasks in Onefile to meet the KSBs in the standard. You can set activities, assign learning content, design quizzes or add instructions. You can also attach resources to support your learners.
Apprentices can reflect on what they've learned using the learning journal and attach evidence to prove their learning.
Teaching and learning tasks can be assigned to individual learners or group cohorts. You can make the task as flexible as you like by adding different completion times and places. Learners will be alerted when they're set a task and can complete it on OneFile.
Each teaching and learning plan can have a different assessment method depending on the criteria - for example, written questions, professional discussion or observation. Study content can also be created using blended learning such as embedded PowerPoint presentations, research, videos and quizzes to test knowledge. Depending on the method used, learners can complete the tasks on their own or schedule a remote meeting with their tutor.
Learners progress through their tasks, tutors are asked to give feedback. They can comment on learner entries, annotate work or sign off work as completed. This function provides developmental feedback against KSBs relating to pass, merit and distinction, supporting learners to achieve.
When feedback is posted, learners are notified and automatically sent the next task - it's that simple.
Each learner's progress is displayed on a dashboard on the portfolio. Tutors can also run reports to track individual and cohort progression.
