How to Keep Learners Motivated in the Lead-Up to Christmas | OneFile

With Christmas fast approaching, it's all too easy to let responsibilities slip. Many of us are still working from home, so the temptation to grab a cosy cup of cocoa, wrap gifts, and turn on a festive movie is strong. But staying motivated-both for us and our learners-requires just a bit of planning and some festive creativity.

Here are our 5 top tips for keeping spirits high and learning alive as we head into the holiday season!

1. Stick to Your Schedule

While it's tempting to relax, sticking to a schedule is key. Keep your calendar organised, set daily priorities, and be a role model. If your learners see you focused and dedicated through to the end, they're more likely to follow suit. Show them that balance is possible and remind them that structure will help them enjoy the holiday season even more!

2. Set Realistic Expectations

December is packed with holiday plans, from family gatherings to gift shopping. Recognise that it's a busy time and set manageable goals. Instead of big deadlines, focus on smaller, attainable targets. These bite-sized achievements will keep your learners motivated and prevent holiday stress from sneaking in.

3. Keep Sessions Short & Sweet

Keeping learners engaged doesn't have to mean long hours. Plan short, interactive sessions full of reflection and hands-on activities. Virtual tasks that encourage observation and creativity can make learning feel fresh. Encourage learners to check in on Teams or Zoom to share progress. Regular, friendly check-ins make a difference and keep the momentum going.

4. Lead by Example

Yes, we'd all love to snuggle up with a hot drink and relax, but your learners will feel more motivated if they see you actively involved. Show them you're committed by being logged in, sending quick updates, and staying engaged. This visible commitment helps foster accountability and inspires learners to keep working.

5. Add a Little Festive Fun

While we're all aiming for productivity, remember it's still Christmas! Embrace the Christmas cheer by incorporating festive elements into your learning activities. Perhaps your design students can create digital Christmas cards, or culinary apprentices can try a Christmas recipe. Bring a bit of magic to your lessons to keep learning enjoyable and memorable!
