Young people wanting to join the civil service will soon be able to do so via a new apprenticeship.
The government is set to open a two-year Career Launch Apprenticeship this summer, creating opportunities in Manchester, Birmingham and London. Applicants must be aged 16 or over and have two GCSEs at grade 4 (C)or above.
This new programme, says the government, has been designed to extend access to a civil service career beyond traditional graduate pathways, thereby widening the talent pool. It offers "dedicated time for professional development, allowing apprentices to gain hands-on experience while working toward a recognised qualification." The scheme's introduction is in line with the government's drive to boost economic growth through developing skills and creating more quality job opportunities for young people.
Rachel Peck, Head of Entry and Progression at the Cabinet Office, said the new programme will bring fresh perspectives into government while giving apprentices valuable qualifications and experience.
She added: "By offering skills-based routes into government, we ensure we don't miss out on talented individuals who haven't followed traditional academic paths."
Civil service apprenticeships are currently available at levels 2 through to 7, with roles found across a range of professions including counter fraud, customer services, cyber security, digital, finance and operational delivery. Further information is available from the civil service careers website.
