Apprenticeship units for employer‑providers: close skills gaps fast

Are you an employer provider looking to offer training that more closely aligns with the specific needs of your business or organisation?

Would you like a targeted programme you can deliver quickly, plugging critical skills gaps in a matter of weeks not months?

If the answer is yes, then have you considered one of the governments new apprenticeship units? They could be exactly what you’re looking for to upskill your existing staff.

With delivery taking from 30–140 hours over one to 16 weeks, this bite size learning option offers speed and flexibility.

And, as the leading learner management platform, Onefile is fully on board and ready to help you. Always ahead of the game, our user-friendly edtech software has already been updated to meet the arrival of apprenticeship units.

We support employer providers to:

  • Deliver end-to-end apprenticeship units in-house
  • Manage the compliance and funding requirements around apprenticeship units
  • Integrate apprenticeship units with existing training programmes.
How apprenticeship units benefit employer providers

Apprenticeship units were introduced by the UK government in April 2026 to help employers respond quickly to evolving skills needs, develop their staff and invest in workforce training.

You can deliver them to your employees yourself as long as you’re registered as an employer provider on the APAR and verified by DWP as being able to deliver specific apprenticeship units and be funded.

Among the units’ biggest selling points is rapid delivery and flexibility. Unlike an apprenticeship standard, which takes at least eight months, these courses can be completed within 30 and 140 hours.

Also, unlike the full apprentice programme, they’ve been designed for learners aged 19 and over who are already employed. Their roll out started last month – following engagement with, and feedback from, employers and training providers – with the first courses now being delivered in these critical skills areas:

  • Artificial Leadership - Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy and Opportunity
  • AI Leadership - AI Adoption, Procurement and Governance
  • AI Leadership - AI Delivery and Organisational Transformation
  • Battery Manufacturing
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Point Installation and Maintenance
  • Electrical Fitting and Assembly
  • Mechanical Fitting and Assembly
  • Permanent Modular Building Assembly
  • Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance
  • Welding (mechanised)

As well as addressing vital skills shortages in key employment sectors, the units also allow you to build on your existing team’s knowledge without them, or you, having to commit to a full apprenticeship. The Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance apprenticeship unit might, for example, be your go-to course when looking to upskill your qualified electricians in how to install and maintain solar panels.

Unlike full apprenticeships, these shorter courses don’t require employees to have standalone English or maths beyond what they need to know to be able to do their job. Conveniently, the units can also offer pathways to a full apprenticeship and will count as prior learning.

Running apprenticeship units alongside other programmes

If you’re already with Onefile, running apprenticeship units alongside your main training programmes won’t be an issue. Onefile already has the baked-in functionality to ensure the units’ seamless integration.

We’ll set them up so that they sit parallel with your learner’s primary programme, removing the need for any workaround or custom development.

And you can track your learners’ progress in real time. Each unit has the same robust tracking as apprenticeships, incorporating progress monitoring, activity tracking, evidence collection, reviews and feedback.

Managing reporting and oversight

As an employer provider you cannot subcontract any part of your apprenticeship unit delivery to another provider. Under the apprenticeship unit funding rules, you must deliver the whole programme.

And as is the case with apprenticeships, it’s crucial that you’re fully compliant with these rules at all times. It’s important too that you check that employees are eligible to take the unit's programme. Individuals working with you who are self-employed, sole traders or operating under IR35 don’t qualify.

At Onefile we have the tracking tools to ensure your evidencing, reporting and record keeping is error-free, on time and compliant. This simplifies your due diligence as there’s just one provider, one contract for services and one line of accountability.

Apprenticeship Units and Ofsted

To give apprenticeship units plenty of time to bed in, they won’t be inspected by Ofsted until April 2027 at the earliest. Instead, they will be monitored on a ‘light touch’ basis, by the DWP and DfE ‘using simple measures and kept separate from qualification achievement rates.’

In an update released on May 13th, 2026, the government said it wants to ‘ensure that quality oversight is proportionate and reflects the distinctive nature of apprenticeship units.’ More detail on how apprenticeship units will fit into the Apprenticeship Accountability Framework will be released at a later date.

Ready now, not later

Apprenticeship units reflect real work activities, rather than abstract learning. But to get the best out of them you need a learner management system that tracks progress across skill areas, identifies knowledge gaps early and supports you in your staff development.

Fortunately, at Onefile we’re all about embracing change and are ready now to support you. Our platform is designed to handle:

  • Multi-component programmes
  • Parallel tracking structures
  • Outcome based progression
  • Compliance ready reporting

That means you can start delivering apprenticeship units in-house, straight away and with complete confidence.

So, if you’re looking for a platform where there is no waiting, no rework, no detours, less complexity and real progress, contact us today for a discovery call.
