National Careers Week 2026

This week marks National Careers Week 2026, an annual event which aims to help young people across the UK prepare for their next steps into the world of work, education and training.

Held at a key point in the academic calendar, NCW serves as a springboard for teachers, careers advisers, tutors and trainers to plan and implement their career-guidance based activities for the rest of the year.

Skills development is a cornerstone of UK government economic policy but finding the right pathway post-16 can be confusing for learners as there are so many different options.

If learners want a level 3 qualification, for instance, should they be staying on in sixth form or college to do A levels then applying for a university place? Or should they instead opt for T levels at FE College, gaining hands-on work experience alongside classroom study before entering employment or Higher Education?

And what about those school leavers wanting to acquire practical, industry-specific skills which lead directly to a job? Should they be considering an apprentice programme or enrolling on a full-time level 2 college course? In England, a foundation apprenticeship could be the answer for learners looking for work-based training in specific sectors such as construction, digital or social care.

To support teaching staff with their career's activity planning and delivery, NCW provides free printable, downloadable, digital and video resources which are available all year round as well as during this week. It also runs apopular virtual careers fair. Additionally, the UCAS website features a wealth of information for young people looking to explore their options and start planning the next stage of their learning journey. It gives learners advice on everything from recognising their personal strengths to comparing various routes into similar careers.
