October is ADHD awareness month – a global initiative aimed at improving understanding of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and challenging people’s perceptions of it.
According to the charity ADHD UK, around two to five percent of UK adults are estimated to have the condition, but many cases go undiagnosed.
Typically, people with ADHD are hyperactive/impulsive or inattentive, or they’re a combination of the two. But, as the charity explains, the name is often misleading. Some people with ADHD are, it says, often hyper focused rather than inattentive. They have no difficulty concentrating if they’re doing something that interests them.
Learning support
ADHD is an underdiagnosed condition in the UK, reports ADHD UK, which means that many people could have it without realising it.
This applies to people of all ages, including school-leavers, so it’s important that employers, college tutors and training providers recognise and provide neurodiversity support for learners.
Apprentices with ADHD might struggle with staying focused on their work, managing their time and being organised but conversely, they can be excellent problem-solvers with an impressive ability to think outside the box.
Using Onefile Engage to nurture neurodivergent learners
Onefile supports neurodiversity by identifying learning needs and providing tailored support strategies.
And as the leading learner management platform for apprenticeships and skills training, we understand that each and every person learns differently, whether neurodivergent or neurotypical.
Some people, for example, like to learn by reading the written word while others prefer visual prompts such as videos, diagrams and charts.
As trainers and employers, it’s helpful to recognise if and where a learner might be struggling so that adjustments to learning styles, materials or work and study time schedules can be made. ACAS has some good advice for employers on reasonable workplace adjustments for neurodivergent employees.
And, thanks to Onefile Engage, our AI powered analytical tool, which works hand-in-hand with Onefile’s Eportfolio and Learning Hub, any issues can be identified early on.
Engage allows you to identify which of your learners might need extra help and support to stay on track. It automatically flags apprentices who could be at risk so you can step in, sending them timely reminders or prompts for action and offering personalised assistance.
By tailoring your support to individual needs and learning patterns, your learners are more likely to stay motivated and complete their course.
